Keeping Your Teak Beautiful

Caring for Your Teak Furniture

One of the reasons teak has been trusted for outdoor furniture for generations is because it asks for very little in return. Naturally rich in oils and tannins, teak is exceptionally durable and well suited to life outdoors. Whether you choose to preserve its warm golden tones or allow it to develop a beautiful silver-grey patina, a small amount of care will keep your furniture looking its best for years to come.

Routine Cleaning

  • Brush away loose dirt, leaves and debris regularly.
  • Wash with warm water and a mild soapy solution using a soft brush or cloth.
  • Rinse with clean water and allow the furniture to dry naturally.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washers, which can damage the wood's surface.

Maintaining the Golden Finish

If you prefer teak's original honey-gold colour:

  • Clean the furniture thoroughly.
  • Allow it to dry completely.
  • Lightly sand the surface with fine-grade sandpaper.
  • Apply a quality teak oil evenly with a clean cloth or brush.
  • Wipe away any excess oil and allow it to dry.
  • Reapply teak oil once or twice a year, depending on exposure to the weather.

Prefer the Natural Silver-Grey Look?

No treatment is required.
Simply clean your furniture periodically and allow it to weather naturally. The silver-grey patina is a natural ageing process and does not affect the strength, durability or longevity of your teak furniture.

Seasonal Care

Spring

  • Give your furniture a thorough clean before the outdoor season begins.
  • If you wish to maintain the original golden colour, this is the ideal time to lightly sand the surface (if required) and apply a fresh coat of teak oil.

Summer

  • Wipe away food spills, bird droppings and standing water promptly.
  • Enjoy your furniture!

Autumn

  • Remove fallen leaves regularly to prevent moisture build-up.
  • If the summer has been particularly hot or your furniture has seen heavy use, you may wish to apply a second coat of teak oil before winter.

Winter

  • Teak furniture can remain outdoors all year round.
  • If using a furniture cover, choose one that is breathable and does not trap moisture.
  • If storing indoors, ensure the furniture is clean, dry and kept in a well-ventilated area.

Pro Tip: Whether you choose to maintain teak's warm golden tones or let it weather to a beautiful silver-grey, consistency is key. Regular cleaning and occasional maintenance will help your furniture look its best for many years to come.
